For the best example, check the second version of "So What" and concentrate on the the last sections leading to Kelly's technically excellent, upbeat funky blues solo, with the rhythm section percolating behind him. Paul Chambers is also well-captured, his bass lines solid and present, and between the two or three rhythm members their renderings are as exciting in retrospect as they were clearly felt by the appreciative audience. Pianist Wynton Kelly sparkles on these recordings, and drummer Jimmy Cobb is a dynamo. Miles recordings often come with a klinker or two, but his commitment to his concepts and tune selection are spot on as a long-time fan I find his work here absolutely satisfying.
Miles himself is riding the wave of successful records, and his playing is creatively powerful and under great control. The itinerant professional, he also serves the songs and the prior recordings in a way that I find satisfying from my love of his work with Miles, but also of what was to come before his premature passing. You can hear his increasing vocabulary, the so-called "sheets of sound" and also a willingness to depart further from the structure and take his playing on an ascension.
This makes his performances over some of Miles' most classic recordings including "So What", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Walkin'" and "All Blues" all the more interesting. The fascinating aspect of this tour was Coltrane's reluctance to participate, as he was eager to move forward with new concepts and not look back to previous heights. The exceptional recording quality brings these albums to the listener at the same value as the albums leading up to this tour, most essentially John Coltrane's Giant Steps and Miles Davis Kind of Blue. Here the liner notes help contextualize the time and momentum of the lead performers - Miles Davis & John Coltrane - and the location being the receptive audiences of Europe make these essential documents of the time. The obvious front runner from these releases is Miles Davis Live Europe 1960, Revisited. Both are exceptional examples of the the expanding list that includes luminaries Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Marion Brown, Charlie Parker, Sun Ra, &c.

As I worked on skeletal versions of the framework that makes Squidco pages (hopefully) consistent, I was able to update the code to something closer to the year 2022, and remove a lot of 2002, which was our first year on the web as a record store. The surprise side effect of these changes has been the eradication of a number of layout glitches, mixed approaches to laying out our page, and discovered redundancy on a number of pages. This week saw more changes to the Squidco website as I continue to update and streamline our code to make the site more phone friendly. Revisiting Two Vital Artists via ezz-thetics: I urge listeners to take advantage of our discounted prices this weekend and pick up some new music to inspire and amaze you. We have all been rewarded with a greater output of recorded music these last years as labels and artists have compensated for lost concerts and festival revenue. Our sale this year will be from Friday, September 2 to Monday, September 5 and will discount all new releases across our catalog. We hope that our annual Labor Day Sale helps to promote and sell recordings from the incredible musicians in our catalog who present unique and masterful music. We continue to support performing and recordings artists, who have had an exceptional struggle over the last years. Masks are still common, and many people are still unwilling to put themselves into public venues. The lay of the land still feels different for performance venues, and the biggest cities seem to have resonating effects from the restrictions and from the inherent concerns of mingling in public. This year saw the proper return to performance for many musicians after a bumpy few years. We have some exciting new releases imminent, and I look forward to cooler (but not too cool) weather and a great list of new releases to share with you.Ībout the US Federal Holiday known as "Labor Day", the day is intended to celebrate those who dedicate their life to work, and, theoretically, for workers to take a break and a mutual deep breath as a culture.
I personally took the time to cross some t's and dot some i's, cleaning up some deadwood in our catalog, making a purchase plan to take us into the Fall (details below), and working with labels on Autumn sales and offers. An unusually quiet week at Squidco as we lead up to the US holiday of Labor Day, and our annual Labor Day sale.
